HICKORY – McDowell High’s junior varsity basketball teams hit the road Tuesday night, taking on the St Stephens Indians.

McDowell 38, St. Stephens 30 (jayvee girls)

The Lady Titans remained undefeated, beating the Indians 38-30.

McDowell (5-0 overall, 2-0 NWC) played without the services of two of their frontcourt players, Makenna Parkins and Naliyah Boyce. However, others stepped up in their absence.

Leila Bragg had a team-high eight points for McDowell. Tayla Wood (9 rebounds) added seven points and Mariah Hunt (6 rebounds) had six points.

Peyton Koone scored five points off the bench. Alana Stephenson chipped in with four points. Daisy Rice and Madi Smith had three points each and Shelby Edwards scored two points.


St. Stephens 52, McDowell 51 (jayvee boys)

The Titans squandered a sizeable lead in the second half and lost a heartbreaker to St. Stephens 52-51.

The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Titans with one game left before the holiday break.

McDowell (4-2 overall, 1-1 NWC) was up as many as 11 points in the second half but failed to put St. Stephens away.

A total of seven Titans scored in the contest. Sophomore Qualique Garner posted a game-high 14 points. Freshman Trent Lewis added 12 points off the bench and Dequan Boyce tallied nine points for McDowell.

Johnathan Ramirez netted five points, Seth Harrison had four points and Michael Queen along with Richard Handy scored two points each.

McDowell’s jayvee boys will be at home for the last time in 2017 Friday afternoon, hosting Fred T. Foard with a special start time of 3 p.m. Foard does not field a junior varsity girls team.
