It was a rough night for the McDowell Titans junior varsity football team as they suffered their first loss of the season, a 22-6 setback at Mitchell High School.

McDowell (2-1) struggled on the offensive side of the ball and it allowed the Mountaineers to take advantage of a short field and jump out to a 16-0 lead.

Gage Young punched in a 3-yard touchdown run to give Mitchell an 8-0 advantage. Then, on a third-quarter possession, Seth Raefield extended the lead to 14-0 on a 3-yard run at the 3:52 mark.

The Titans were able to avoid a shutout in the fourth quarter when Blake Greenway ran back an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown. That turned out to be the lone highlight in the game.

McDowell will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 26 at Hickory in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference opener for both squads (6:30 p.m. kickoff).
