McDowell High School and its junior varsity basketball teams received a warm welcome to the Northwestern 3A/4A on Friday afternoon, taking a pair of games at Titan Gym.
In junior varsity girls action, the McDowell Lady Titans had little trouble in disposing of the Hickory Lady Red Tornados 56-22. The Lady Titans wasted little time as they jumped out to a 14-3 lead against Hickory and the margin only grew from there, spiking up to 20 points at the half and a 30-point margin after three quarters.
Freshman Madi Smith led all scorers with 13 points and five rebounds. Makenna Parkins (4 rebounds) added 10 points and Naliyah Boyce (7 rebounds) had nine points.
Alana Stephenson tallied seven points and three rebounds. Leila Bragg (4 assists) chipped in three points. Mariah Hunt, Tayla Wood (6 rebounds), Katie Baker and Daisy Rice had two points apiece.
McDowell 54, Hickory 42 (jayvee boys)
The junior varsity boys contest was a bit more competitive in regards to the final outcome, but fortunately it continued in McDowell’s favor as the Titans held off the Hickory Red Tornados 54-42 Friday afternoon at Titan Gym.
Freshman Dequan Boyce (6 rebounds, 3 assists) was the Titans' leading scorer with 14 points in the victory. Gavin Davis had 13 points and Qualique Garner (4 rebounds) added eight points.
Tyler Rector netted seven points. Trent Lewis (8 rebounds) tallied six points. Jalen Robbins had three points and Michael Queen along with Colby Effler scored one point each.
McDowell continues Northwestern Conference play on Tuesday at St. Stephens.
