McDowell High School’s two junior varsity basketball teams opened up the 2018-19 season with a pair of easy home victories against East Burke.
In junior varsity girls action, the McDowell Lady Titans used a strong defensive effort to lock down the East Burke Lady Cavaliers 54-15 inside of Titan Gym.
The first nine minutes of play was close as the Lady Titans enjoyed a short 13-9 advantage. But from there, McDowell used its effort on the defensive end and ran away with the contest, outscoring the Lady Cavs 41-6 the rest of the game.
Katie Baker (6 assists) and Payton Koone led the way with 11 points each and Madi Smith (4 rebounds, 3 assists) added 10 points to give the Lady Titans three players in double figures.
Sydney Strode had nine points off the bench. Clementine Miller tallied eight points and Marianna Carson finished with six points.
McDowell 52, East Burke 25 (jayvee boys)
In junior varsity boys action, a total of 10 McDowell players scored in a 52-25 victory against the East Burke Cavaliers.
The Titans enjoyed a 12-6 lead after one quarter and incrementally added to the advantage, going up by 12 at the half and 22 after three quarters.
Mason McPeters was the lone Titan in double figures with 10 points. The rest of the nine scorers produced in nearly proportionate amounts.
Peyton Rose had eight points off the bench. Colby Effler and Kamden Silver (4 rebounds) netted six points each.
Michael Queen (4 rebounds), Gavin Davis and Eli Crawley (8 rebounds) had five points apiece.
Josh Smith, Mason Lamb and Grayson Blackwelder finished with two points apiece.
McDowell will be on the road Friday at Fred T Foard (4:30 p.m., jayvee boys only).
