MORGANTON – After a 10-day wait, the McDowell Lady Titans junior varsity basketball team returned to action on Tuesday and came away with a 40-35 victory at rival Freedom.
McDowell, coming off a 26-point loss at Alexander Central in its last game, earned a hard-fought win on the road.
Madi Smith led all scorers with 12 points and nine rebounds. Smith produced late in the game; her basket and free throw gave McDowell a 36-34 lead with 1:39 left in regulation.
Payton Koone added 11 points. Clementine Miller and Sydney Strode scored five points each. Makiya Burgess tallied four points and Aubrey Goode scored one point and had four rebounds.

Time ran out on the McDowell Titans junior varsity basketball team Tuesday evening in a three-point loss to Freedom, its first of the season.
The Patriots led for the entire game and were up as many as 18 points after three quarters before the Titans put together a late surge.
Michael Queen (2 points, 5 rebounds) hit a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left in regulation. Then, after forcing the Patriots into a turnover, McDowell had one last shot at tying the game. Guard Colby Effler was able to get up a shot attempt but it fell shy of the basket as time expired.
Effler and Jandon Robbins finished with 10 points each. Riley Moore (4 assists) chipped in eight points and Mason McPeters had seven points.
Peyton Rose and Kamden Silver scored six points each. Zavion Bianchini (6 rebounds) netted five points and Gavin Davis finished with two points.
McDowell returns home on Friday against Hickory (4 p.m. jayvee girls).
