Summertime baseball gets underway locally tonight (Wednesday) as McDowell County’s American Legion Post 56 takes the field for another season of Junior Legion baseball.

Post 56 will play for a chance to represent Area IV in the Junior Legion State Playoffs. This year’s schedule consists of 32 games over the next seven weeks. Most nights will feature a doubleheader with one regulation seven-inning game along with a shortened five-inning contest.

Familiar high school programs that are being represented in Junior Legion this season include R-S Central, East Rutherford, Chase, Hendersonville, South Caldwell and Alexander Central. The schedule also includes Legion posts from Burke, Caldwell and Rutherford Counties along with Landrum, S.C.

The full seven-inning games will be the ones that officially count toward determining the area’s playoff qualifiers.

McDowell opens the season with three straight road dates starting tonight at R-S Central (6 p.m. start). Post 56 will open its home schedule on May 20 with a single game against Hendersonville (7 p.m.). All home games will be played at McDowell High School.

Donnie Poplin will manage the 2019 Junior Legion team with McDowell High head coach Alex Smith as an assistant.

This year’s Junior Legion roster will feature a lot of familiar names to those who followed McDowell High’s varsity and jayvee baseball teams this season.

Six sophomores, who each took on a significant role on the Titans’ varsity team, including pitchers Chapel Matson, Justin Davis and Ethan Davis, catcher Cyrus Black and outfielders Three Young and Ethan Hamm, will make up the core of the Junior Legion squad. Infielder Justin Dula, a junior, will also be on the roster as he is age-eligible for this season.

Members of this season’s junior varsity Titan team participating for Post 56 include Travis Bailey, Ben Barnes, Cole Weaver, Ethan Hensley, Logan Duncan, Michael Lewis, Dusty Revis, Caleb Jimison, Ty Smith and Hunter Sills.

The final members of the Post 56 roster include current middle school pitchers Noah Higgins and Hunter Byerly and position players Chase McCurry, Kaden Elkins, Zack Whitson, Matthew Spivey and Braden Beck.

Note : Several of the older MHS varsity players will play for Burke County Post 21 in Senior Legion ball against this summer. That team is coached by former Titan player and coach Brent Rowe.
