A new season is about to begin for the McDowell Lady Titans varsity soccer team and for first-year head coach Seth Hunt, there’s a renewed optimism in the program as a good number of varsity players return this season.

Hunt, after coaching soccer at East McDowell Middle School, has taken the reins of the McDowell program and is encouraged with some of the things he has seen here in the first couple weeks of the preseason.

Hunt and varsity assistant coach Thomas Atkinson hope to improve the product on the field. The team struggled a year ago, going 2-17-1 overall, but the expectations are for some improvement in the winner’s column this season.

I think we have put together a squad that can be competitive and I really cannot wait to see what these ladies can do on the field,” said Hunt. “We have several returning players from last year´s squad, and those girls who have moved up from last year’s jayvee squad are already filling in the gaps.

Our older kids are showing the leadership skills that I think are needed for success. We look forward to getting started.”

Members of the varsity soccer team include Andrea Abernathy, Autumn Boyles, Leila Bragg, Noelle Fields, Lyric Fletcher, Alexis Garcia, Jessica Givens, Bethany Hartwell, Zitlaly Juarez, Danae Lagos, Abby Lewis, Carrie Poore, Madeline Sanchez Ramirez, Miryam Ramirez, Melanie Rojas, Channing Wellman and Tyler Young.

McDowell opens its season today (Wednesday) at Titan Stadium hosting Mitchell.

It then has four more games outside of league play, including three combined matches against two perennially strong programs in R-S Central and Owen.

The Lady Titans are scheduled to visit Mitchell on March 11, and the team will also have a match at Patton on March 27 to finish up its schedule outside of league play. McDowell opens Northwestern 3A/4A Conference action on Tuesday, March 12 at Watauga.

Home dates for league matches include Alexander Central (March 15), West Caldwell (March 19), Freedom (March 26), Watauga (Apr. 5), Hickory (Apr. 15), Saint Stephens (Apr. 29) and senior night against South Caldwell on May 3.
