MHS teams struggle at NWC track championships

High finishes were few and far between for the McDowell Titans and Lady Titans track teams in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference championship at Lenoir-Rhyne University last week.

The Titans tied West Caldwell for sixth place, while the Lady Titans finished eighth.

Alexander (188) won the boys championship and was followed by Watauga (161), South Caldwell (110), Freedom (72), Hickory (57) the Titans (33) and West Caldwell (33) and St. Stephens (26).

The Lady Titans scored 22.5 points and finished behind Watauga (253), Alexander Central (149), Freedom (62), South Caldwell (51), St. Stephens (50), West Caldwell (33) and Hickory (25.5).

McDowell’s best individual finish came in the girls’ shot put, where Cierra Flack placed second with a throw of 33 feet, 8.5 inches.

Other Lady Titans scoring points included Autumn Bartlett (6th shot put, 30-8), Shaquoia Largent (4th discus, 86-10), Olivia Davis (6th high jump, 4-2), and the 4X200 meter relay team of Abigail Williams, Reagan Tipper, Davis and Courtney Roper (4th).

Scoring for the Titans were Walker Hughes (5th shot put, 39-4.5), Trevor Kettles (4th discus, 110-6), Dequan Boyce (4th triple jump, 40-5.5; 7th long jump, 18-6.25), Calvin Stevenson (4th pole vault, 9-6), Jacob Craeton (8th 110-meter hurdles, 19.57), the 4X800 relay team of Fabian Bradley, Victor Adams, Josh Thapa and Barrett Webb (5th), the 4X200 relay team of Riley Moore, Preston Dennison, Toby Finn and Boyce (6th), the 4X100 relay team of Moore, Dennison, Finn and Boyce (4th), and the 4X400 relay team of Hazim Imani, Thapa, Webb and Bradley (6th).

The West Regional meet is set for next Saturday at Providence High in Matthews.
