It was a very prosperous Monday for East McDowell Middle School’s two basketball teams as they earned a clean sweep at cross-town rival West McDowell.
In the girls’ contest, the East McDowell Lady Trojans used a fourth-quarter run to pull away from West McDowell 40-31.
West had a slim advantage through each of the first three quarters, including a 26-24 lead after three quarters. But in the final stanza, the Lady Trojans broke loose and went on a 16-5 run to pull out the victory.
The rally began with five unanswered points starting with a Tayla Carson (6 points) basket in the paint 30 seconds into the fourth off a Kensly Stewart (14 points, 5 steals, 3 rebounds) assist to tie the game.
Then, after a couple stops on the defensive end, Stewart hit a transition jumper with less than four minutes left, giving East the lead for good at 28-26.
Emily Alfaro (5 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) added to the margin hitting a free throw with 3:26 left making it a three-point game. West was never able to get any closer the rest of the way.
Peyton McPeters (9 rebounds) added seven points and Kennedy Dobson scored six points.
Abby McMahan (7 rebounds) had seven points to lead the Lady Spartans. Gracie Rice netted six points. Emma Carroll (3 rebounds), Brooke Thompson (3 assists, 3 rebounds) and Anna Carroll finished with four points apiece.
Sage Young and Emma England (8 rebounds) had two points each and Emma Washburn scored one point.
East McDowell 45, West McDowell 41 (boys basketball)
A strong effort in the second half also factored into the boys’ contest as East McDowell was victorious 45-41 against county rival West McDowell.
Down 22-20 at the half, East used an 11-1 run over a span of two-and-a-half minutes to seize control of what was a back-and-forth battle throughout the entire first half.
The Spartans did make things interesting late, trimming the lead back down from nine points to four in the final minute.
Elijah Smith (11 points) nailed a 3-pointer from the wing with 30 seconds to go getting the Spartans to within a 44-40 margin, however they got no closer as David Olivo (3 points) hit a crucial free throw with 12 seconds left to secure the victory.
Chase Coley led all scorers with 19 points, six rebounds and five steals for East. Brady Pyatt (10 rebounds) tallied nine points and Xavier Taylor had eight points. Noah Higgins (4 points) and Caden Compton (2 points) also scored for the Trojans.
Devyn Cash led the Spartans with 13 points to join Smith in double figures. Jeremiah Ellis (8 rebounds) had five points. Jackson Marsh and Ashton Burnette scored four points each and Matthew Spivey scored two points.
