The McDowell Titans junior varsity basketball team kept its perfect record on the season intact Friday afternoon, rallying to beat the Saint Stephens Indians 47-46 in an overtime thriller at Titan Gymnasium.
The victory improves McDowell to 8-0 on the season with a 2-0 mark in Northwestern 3A/4A Conference play.
Neither team could seize control of the scoreboard in regulation and McDowell had to overcome a five-point deficit in the final minute of play. Mason McPeters sealed the comeback victory with a long 3-pointer from in front of the Titans' bench with less than three seconds in overtime.
The Indians attempted a final play but turned the ball over in the backcourt, and McDowell, on its next inbounds, ran out the clock.
McPeters (6 rebounds, 5 assists) along with Zavion Bianchini (5 rebounds) tallied 13 points each. Michael Queen added eight points and Colby Effler scored six points for the Titans. Effler made a crucial 3-pointer in regulation to force the overtime period.
Gavin Davis had three points and Jandon Robbins along with Peyton Rose scored two points each.
Both of McDowell’s junior varsity basketball teams will host Watauga on Tuesday (4 p.m. jayvee girls start). Saint Stephens didn't field a jayvee girls' team.
