The offense carried the day for McDowell County American Legion Post 56 in a 10-5 win at R-S Central in the Junior Legion season opener.
Post 56 jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one half inning. R-S Central tied the game on two separate occasions, the first being in the bottom of the third, scoring three times and again in the sixth when it was 4-4.
However McDowell exploded for six runs in the final frame to pull away.
The Post 56 lineup, which consisted of mainly freshmen in the debuts, produced 10 hits in the contest.
Logan Duncan had three hits in the leadoff spot, driving in one run and scoring three times. Hunter Sills and Braden Beck added two hits each and Ethan Hensley, Cole Weaver and Zack Whitson finished with one hit apiece in the victory.
Duncan led off the game with a triple to left field. Then, after a walk by Hensley put runners on the corners, Michael Lewis made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Duncan.
Later in the frame Sills delivered an RBI single to push the lead to 2-0 and then a bases-loaded walk by Matthew Spivey gave McDowell its third run of the inning.
In the seventh, both Spivey and Chase McCurry reached on errors. Then, a wild pitch scored McCurry, Duncan drove in a run with a single, and Cole Weaver slapped a ground ball past third base for two more Post 56 runs.
Four different pitchers for McDowell tossed in the opener with Duncan earning the win as he finished the game with a scoreless seventh inning, striking out three batters.
Caleb Jimison started the game, but command issues shortened his outing. Jimison was charged for three runs and no hits in 2 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking five batters. He was followed by 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball from Ty Smith in relief.
Post 56 was on the road Thursday at Chase for a doubleheader, but results were not available at press time. The season-opening road trip continues Friday at Burke County Post 21.
