The McDowell County Post 56 Junior Legion team was in split-squad duty on Thursday Night.
Post 56’s A team beat South Caldwell 7-3 Thursday night at Titan Field.
The theme of scoring runs early continued on Thursday as McDowell crossed the plate four times in the first inning. Ethan Davis ripped a two-run homer to right. That, along with an RBI single from Three Young, gave Post 56 the early advantage.
South Caldwell chipped into the lead, getting back to a 4-2 margin, but a four-run fifth essentially put the game away. Justin Dula, the winning pitcher on Thursday, did a lot of damage at the plate as well, going 2-for-2. His three-run blast in the fifth put McDowell in front 7-2.
Both Davis and Young went 2-for-3 in the game and Chapel Matson went 2-for-2 in the leadoff spot.
Dula tossed a complete game on 99 pitches, scattering three runs on seven hits. He recorded seven strikeouts and walked a pair.
McDowell B 13, Watauga 3
Post 56’s B team of current and upcoming freshmen went on the road Thursday night and beat Watauga by a 13-3 margin.
All of the offensive production from both teams came in the first three frames. The score was tied at 2-2 after one inning when Post 56 scored five times in the second.
Watauga followed with a single run in the bottom of the second to get back with a 7-3 deficit.
McDowell blew it open in the third with six more runs, reaching double figures.
Post 56 recorded seven hits in the contest and was the beneficiary of 13 walks from Watauga pitching. Caleb Jimison (2-2, double, 2RBIs) and Ethan Hensley (2-2, triple, 2BB) had two hits each. Logan Duncan (1-3, double, BB), Zack Whitson and Cole Weaver (1-3, 3 RBIs) added one hit apiece. Weaver’s lone hit was an RBI single in the second.
McDowell continues to receive solid pitching from its younger staff members. Hunter Byerly started with three innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Byerly struck out two batters and walked one. Noah Higgins entered in the fourth and tossed three scoreless frames, striking out four batters.
Post 56 will be at home on Tuesday hosting East Rutherford in a double header.
