The McDowell County American Legion Post 56 Junior team earned a sweep of Chase in a doubleheader Thursday evening in Rutherford County.
In the first game, Post 56 received a strong effort from pitcher Justin Dula in a 6-1 win. Dula tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing a run on one hit and striking out nine.
McDowell led wire-to-wire, taking a 1-0 lead in the second followed by two more in the fourth, a single run in the fifth and two more in the seventh.
Three Young went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Young’s fifth inning double scored Chapel Matson to make it 5-1. He then doubled in another run in the seventh.
Matson (BB), Ethan Hamm (1-4) and Ethan Davis (1-2, 2BB) added a hit apiece.
McDowell 5, Chase 1
In the second game of the doubleheader, Post 56 rallied in the last inning to beat Chase 5-1 in a shortened, five-inning contest.
Down 1-0 after four, Post 56 scored all five of their runs. Caleb Jimison walked and ultimately scored on a wild pitch, tying the game 1-1.
Then with the bases loaded and two outs, a three-run double by Logan Duncan broke it open when a fielding error on the play allowed Duncan to make the round trip around the bases giving Post 56 a 5-1 lead.
That productive inning was enough for the pitching staff. After Hunter Byerly (3 IP, 1R, 3H, 3K, BB) tossed three innings, Braden Beck along with Duncan shut down the last two innings for McDowell.
Post 56 remains on the road Friday night, playing Burke County Post 21 in a doubleheader. McDowell hosts Hendersonville Monday for a single game (7 p.m.).
