McDowell County’s American Legion fastpitch softball program kicked off with an 8-6 win Tuesday night against Watauga at Big League Camp.
Post 56 accumulated 11 hits in total as it overcame a slow start in the debut. Laynie Hudgins (2-3, RBI) and Maggie Rometti (2-2, 2RBIs) had two hits each in the game.
Bailey Elliott (RBI), Kally Fowler, Katie Baker, Lauren Hudgins, Logan Lilly, Madi Smith and Parker Brown finished with one hit apiece.
Wilkes 5, McDowell 4
McDowell Post 56 fastpitch finished its first week of play with a valiant effort, but eventually lost to Wilkes Post 31 5-4.
Wilkes jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after three innings of play.
McDowell responded by tying the score 4-4 after five innings. Unfortunately, Post 31 was able to push across a late run and made it hold up to win by a run.
Candace Cooper (3 IP, 4R, 7H) and Lucy Hames (3 IP, 1R, 3H) split duties on the mound for Post 56 in the losing effort.
Offensively McDowell mustered eight hits off Wilkes pitcher Arden Wagoner (7 IP, 4R, 8H, 5K), who went the distance.
Jaden Shuford (2-3, R, BB) had two hits, both of them for extra bases. Madi Smith (1-3, 2B), Parker Brown (1-3, R), Bailey Elliott (1-3, R), Lucy Hames (1-3, RBI), Avery Jordan (1-2, R, 2RBIs, BB) and Taylor Morgan added one hit apiece.
McDowell Post 56 returns to action Tuesday, hosting Lincoln County Post 30. McDowell is at home Thursday against 2018 state finalist Hickory Post 48. All home games start at 7 p.m. at Big League Camp.
