For the first two-and-a-half quarters Tuesday, the McDowell Lady Titans were dead in the water.

But it was no problem – there was plenty of time left.

The Lady Titans (3-0) woke up midway through the third quarter and turned a 14-point deficit into a 64-55 win over the R-S Central Hilltoppers at Titan Gym.

The key was a 19-2, third-quarter run that left the Hilltoppers (2-2) flabbergasted and the Lady Titans in possession of an arm’s-length lead they sustained for the rest of the night.

Senior guard Dezi Williams (10 rebounds, 4 steals) scored 10 of her game-high 20 in the third, with eight of them coming during the decisive run. Junior post Makenna Parkins scored 12 of her 17 in the third, and rang up a huge double-double with 15 rebounds.

Post Naliyah Boyce added seven and gave the Lady Titans a third double-figure rebounder with 12. Alana Stephenson (team-high 3 assists) came off the bench to toss in seven as well.

“The girls fought like crazy in the second half,” said McDowell head coach Jennifer Kinninger. “I’m very proud of these girls.”

The Lady Titans fell behind 12-2 out of the gate and were staring at a 36-23 deficit by halftime. The lead reached 14 at 39-25 early in the third.

But Parkins scored in the post, and then found Boyce on a nice, high-low assist on the next trip down the court, and McDowell was off to the races.

The Lady Titans’ transition game started clicking, and Williams took full advantage, going to the hoop aggressively. The senior’s coast-to-coast lay-in got McDowell within 41-39. She then stole the ball and made another layup to tie the game at 41-41 with 1:16 to go in the third.

After an R-S Central timeout, Boyce grabbed an offensive rebound and found Stephenson for an open 3-pointer that made it 44-41, and the Lady Titans never trailed again.

McDowell led 46-43 after three and eventually stretched the lead to as many as 10 late in the fourth. The Lady Titans outscored Central 41-19 in the second half.

Jada Wilkins led the Hilltoppers with 19. Maddie Gillie added 14 and Jada Logan 12. But Central shot just 25 percent (16-of-65) from the field, and McDowell out-rebounded the Hilltoppers 54-33 overall and 19-17 on the offensive glass.

The Lady Titans are on the road at Mitchell Friday (4 p.m. jayvee girls).
