The McDowell Lady Titans’ Northwestern 3A/4A Conference opponents are finding McDowell to be a bit more trouble than in the first rotation through the league, and that trend continued Tuesday at Saint Stephens.
The Lady Titans (5-14 overall, 3-10 NWC) fell 4-2 to a St. Stephens club that swatted them 8-0 in the first meeting between the two. Tuesday’s match was a one-goal affair throughout most of the second half, with the Indians’ final score coming with just five seconds left to play.
“(We) played an excellent game, a far step above the last time these two teams met,” said McDowell head coach Seth Hunt.
The Lady Titans struck first when Lyric Fletcher drilled a free kick over the outstretched hands of the St. Stephens goalkeeper for a 1-0 advantage.
The Indians answered with a score of their own off a free kick less than 10 minutes later, and the score was tied headed into halftime.
St. Stephens struck quickly when the second half began, scoring twice in the first 20 minutes to take a 3-1 lead.
But McDowell didn’t quit. Madeline Sanchez placed a beautiful shot behind the Indians’ keeper from near midfield to pull the Lady Titans within 3-2.
McDowell had a solid chance to tie the game on a nice shot by Andrea Abernathy, but the St. Stephens keeper managed to keep the ball out of the net.
Fletcher and Sanchez each had a goal and Danae Lagos had an assist for the Lady Titans. McDowell goalkeeper Leila Bragg made 11 saves.
