In the final tuneup heading into Northwestern Conference play, the McDowell Titans continue to work hard and used a second-half surge to defeat the Avery County Vikings 4-1 in Newland to earn their first road win of the season.
David Amador put the Titans on the board with a score at the 34th minute, giving them a 1-0 lead.
Then, in the second half, Avery scored once while McDowell (2-4) countered with three more goals, creating separation.
Joseph Zuani added a goal at the 48th minute. Santiago Medina continued the surge with a score four minutes later and then Seth Hughes capped the win at the 63rd minute with a goal.
The Titans finished with an 11-6 shots advantage in the match. Freshmen Brian Magana stepped in at keeper on Wednesday and delivered, making five saves in the match.
McDowell with the victory snaps a three-match losing streak and both wins so far in non-conference play have come against the Vikings. The Titans (2-4) will begin Northwestern Conference play on Monday at home against Hickory.
