The McDowell Titans placed last among the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference golf teams in Monday’s match at Brushy Mountain, the home course of Alexander Central.
The Titans shot a 413 to place behind West Caldwell (325), Alexander Central (332), Hickory (339), St. Stephens (367), South Caldwell (377), Freedom (354) and Watauga (374).
West Caldwell now owns a commanding lead in the race for the conference championship. The Warriors are 77 shots up on second-place Alexander Central.
The Titans’ top score came from R.J. Stanley, who shot 95. Jordan Johnson (98), Matthew Johnson (109) and Evan Grigsby (111) also played for McDowell.
Freedom’s Jared Clontz and Hickory’s Eli Wyatt both shot 76 to share medalist honors. West Caldwell got a 77 from Noah Bumgarner and a 78 from Matthew Gurnsey. Gurnsey leads Clontz by six strokes and Wyatt by seven in the race for league medalist.
The NWC teams visit McDowell next Monday as the Marion Lake Club hosts the match.
