The McDowell Titans suffered just their second setback of the wrestling season Tuesday, falling 43-26 to a solid R-S Central team in Rutherfordton.

McDowell fell to 18-2 on the year. The match was originally scheduled as a quad, but ended up being only the Titans and Hilltoppers. R-S Central won the coin flip, which meant McDowell couldn’t adjust its lineup to maximum effect, and that helped Central gain the edge.

“They’re a really tough team and they match up great with us,” said Titans head coach Tim Hutchins. “We needed the flip and we didn’t get it, and it just snowballed from there. We gave up five pins and only had three, and that’s not what we usually do.

“But R-S is really good and they have some great athletes right now.”

The match began at 106 pounds, where R-S Central’s Zack Lewis pin Calvin Stevenson. Toby Finn (113 pounds) got the points right back with a pin of Drake Trevette.

At 120, the Titans’ Alldyn Conley suffered a 12-4 setback to Loki Ryne. McDowell’s Toney McGee (126) followed with a pin of Michael Brown to remain undefeated on the season.

Dante Quitman (132) was pinned by Central’s Zant Parker. Avery Roberson recorded the second straight Hilltopper pin with a win over Daniel Maynor (138). Central’s Lucas Ferguson then scored a 6-2 win over Channing Watson (145).

The Titans’ Jacob Phillips (152) stopped the bleeding with a technical fall win. But McDowell’s Connor Good (160) was pinned with just three seconds left in the third period. At 170, the Hilltoppers’ Liam Harris scored a 7-3 decision over Aaron Buchanan.

Josh Morgan (182) pinned Central’s Austin Reich in the second period. But McDowell’s Aamon Haynes (195) dropped a 5-1 loss to Angel Rodrigeuz.

Central’s Reggie Hines (220) pinned Joe Hullett. McDowell heavyweight Aaron Duncan finished out the match with an 11-1 major decision victory.

The Titans will compete in the Maiden Tournament Friday.
