The McDowell Titan wrestling team had only one individual placer at the Smoky Mountain Grapple in Asheville over the weekend.

Sophomore 126-pounder Toby Finn captured fifth place in the event, which featured 22 teams from multiple states. The Titans scored 26 points as a team to finish 18th.

Newton-Conover won the tournament with 193.5 points, and was followed in the top three by Cherokee (Ga.) with 177 and Pisgah with 156.5.

Finn opened up with a 13-9 win over Preston Burnette of Polk. Braxton Mann of Science Hill (Tenn.) defeated Finn 5-0, bumping Finn to the consolation bracket.

There, Finn pinned Talon Johnson of Hendersonville and decisioned Chapin’s (S.C.) William Anderson 6-3. Finn then dropped a 9-0 decision to Northern Guilford’s Max Benfield, but bounced back to defeat Cherokee’s Cade Johnson for fifth place. Finn finished 4-2 in the event.

Only three other Titans won matches. Joseph Thomas (113 pounds), Tomas Laws (138) and Josh Morgan (170) won one bout apiece.

McDowell will compete in the East Burke Duals Friday and Saturday.
