Titans, Lady Titans run at NWC preseason cross country meet

The McDowell Titans and Lady Titans cross country teams competed in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference preseason meet in Newton Wednesday.

The Lady Titans placed sixth while the Titans didn’t field enough runners to post a team score.

For the Lady Titans, Danae Lagos set the pace with a 23:45.14 to finish in eighth place overall. Marina Berasategui was 23rd overall with a time of 26:27.49. Anna Gatterman was 31st with a time of 27:15.19.

Breauna Rodas, Marissa Hughes and Audra Gibbs also competed for the Lady Titans.

Barrett Webb was the top finisher for the Titans, posting a 19:42 to place 16th overall. Fabian Bradley ran a 20:47.23 for a 29th place finish. Emir Juarez was 31st with a time of 20:53.89.

Joseph Moss also ran for the Titans.

St. Stephens won the team meet with a score of 35. Watauga (46), Hickory (96), Freedom (100), Alexander Central (105) and South Caldwell (147) rounded out the team scoring.

Tyler Christenson of St. Stephens placed first overall with a 17:20.13.

Watauga had the top five finishers in the girls’ race and won easily with a score of 15. Hickory (83), Alexander Central (87), Freedom (100), St. Stephens (118) and McDowell (119) rounded out the team scoring.

Watauga’s Sophia Ritter won the race with a time of 21:00.48, finishing nearly two minutes ahead of the second-place runner.

McDowell is in action again Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Freedom Invitational.
