Titans, Lady Titans struggle at Alexander Central meet

The McDowell Titans and Lady Titans competed in a four-team track meet at Alexander Central Wednesday, with both squads placing fourth.

In the boys’ meet, the Titans scored 29 points to finish behind Northwestern 3A/4A Conference squads Alexander Central (105), Freedom (73) and Hickory (59).

The Lady Titans scored 14 points, placing behind Alexander Central (122), Freedom (62) and Hickory (22).

Despite the team finishes, several McDowell athletes turned in outstanding performances.

Sophomore Dequan Boyce won the triple jump with a leap of 38 feet, 3.5 inches, defeating a pair Alexander Central jumpers who took second and third.

Lady Titans sophomore thrower Cierra Flack won the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 6 inches, outdistancing the second-place thrower by two feet.

The Titans’ Cal Stevenson placed second in the pole vault with a jump of 8 feet.

Seth Harrison took third in the high jump. Lady Titans Reagan Tipper (triple jump) and Summer Bartlett (shot put) also placed third in their respective events. In addition, the Titans’ 4X800 meter, 4X400, 4X200 meter and 4X100 meter relay teams placed third.

Barrett Webb placed fourth for the Titans in the 3,200, and Trevor Kettles took fourth in the discus.

Jacob Craeton was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles. The Lady Titans’ Autumn Bartlett placed fifth in the shot put.

McDowell is idle until Apr. 3 when it runs at Alexander Central again.
