A trio of McDowell Titan wrestlers was named to the All-Northwestern 3A/4A Conference team released last week.
Senior Josh Morgan and sophomores Toby Finn and Calvin Stevenson made the team, which was – not surprisingly – dominated by athletes from State 3A dual team champions St. Stephens.
Morgan, a 170-pounder, battled a painful shoulder injury throughout most of the season, but still finished fourth in the West 4A Regional and earned his first trip to the State Championships.
Morgan finished with a 27-16 overall mark and a 4-2 record in the Northwestern Conference regular season. He placed second in his weight class at the NWC championship tournament. It was Morgan’s second appearance on the all-NWC team.
Finn, a 126-pounder, placed second in the Regional and went on to finish in fifth place in N.C. in his first appearance at States. Finn was 4-2 at the state tournament.
Finn went 44-13 overall and was 6-1 in NWC regular-season matches. He placed second at the NWC championships.
Stevenson, a 138-pounder, placed second in the conference championships after compiling a 5-2 mark in the NWC regular season. He finished 15-16 overall.
Spencer Leonhardt of Freedom, who won the state 3A championship at 145 pounds for the second consecutive year, was named the league’s Lower Weight Wrestler of the Year. St. Stephens 195-pounder Salvador Gilvaja, who also won a state championship, was the Upper Weight Wrestler of the Year. South Caldwell’s Dustin Herman was the conference tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Billy Baker of St. Stephens was named Coach of the Year after leading the Indians to the conference and state championships.
Joining Finn, Morgan and Stevenson on the all-conference team were St. Stephens’ De’Untae Henry, Coy Reid, Graham Ormand, Ivan Vergel, Gilvaja, Jordan Bolling, Johnny Urzua, Blake Baker, Dakota Metcalf and Daniel Tellez; Alexander Central’s Chase Treadway, Taylor Dalton, Marterion Howell, Tevin Clark, Caleb Fountain, Isaac Ramella and Isaac Chapman; Freedom’s Leonhardt, Fernando Soto-Luna, Jeris Hall, Davion Lowdermilk, Clay Beach and Wolfgang Wheeler; South Caldwell’s Herman and Josh Voelkel; Watauga’s Ben Critcher; and West Caldwell’s Devin Bumgarner, Easton Griffin and Freddy Guardiola.
The Titans finished 15-21 overall and 4-3 in the conference in duals under first-year head coach Justin Snethen. McDowell placed fourth in the regular-season NWC standings.
