The McDowell Titans played some of their best golf of the year at Silver Creek (Freedom) Monday, with three players shooting 94 or better, but the team still placed last among the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference squads.
The Titans shot 381, finishing behind West Caldwell (306), Alexander Central (320), Freedom (332), Hickory (339), St. Stephens (342), Watauga (352) and South Caldwell (374).
Matthew Johnson led the Titans with an 89. R.J. Stanley shot 90 and Jordan Johnson 94. Dalton Byerly and Matthew Ellis also played for the Titans.
West Caldwell’s Noah Bumgarner lit it up en route to medalist honors, shooting a 3-under-par 68. Freedom’s Jared Clontz finished second with a 73 and Alexander Central’s Cole Carrigan finished third with a 74.
West Caldwell, which had three golfers shoot 76 or better, expanded its already enormous lead in the league standings. The Warriors (1,893) hold a 127-stroke lead over second-place Alexander Central (2,020). Hickory (2,047) is in third.
In the individual standings, Clontz and Bumgarner are dead-even at 372, two shots up on West Caldwell’s Matthew Gurnsey.
The regular-season finale is set for today (Wednesday) at Boone Golf Club (2 p.m. start).
