The final score of 42-30 was a popular one at Watauga Tuesday night – the McDowell Titans split their two matches, each by the same score.
McDowell (2-2 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference, 11-16 overall) fell to the Freedom Patriots but defeated the host Pioneers in conference action.
McDowell 42, Watauga 30 – The Titans rode their dominance of the light weights to a victory over the Pioneers.
After a double forfeit at 120 pounds to start the match, Toby Finn (126 pounds) and Calvin Stevenson (132) picked up forfeit victories. There was another double forfeit at 138, but McDowell owned a 12-0 lead, and that turned out to be the final margin.
McDowell forfeited to Luke Cuthbert at 145, but Dalton Byerly (152) got the points right back via forfeit. Preston Dennison (160) got six more forfeit points.
Josh Morgan pinned Watauga’s Jacob Ruppert at 170 in the first bout that actually made it to the mat to give the Titans a commanding 30-6 lead.
Ben Critcher pinned McDowell’s Jesse Barrier at 182 and the Titans forfeited to Ben Oakes at 195. Trevor Kettles (220) pinned Watauga’s Aaron Lubkemann. The Pioneers’ Grant Lawrence pinned Jonathan Deal at 285.
Watauga’s final win came at 106 when Daniel Russom pinned Anthony Price. The Titans’ Joseph Thomas finished it off with a pin of Kasen Kulczyk at 113.
Freedom 42, McDowell 30 – The Patriots won the first four weight classes and held on for the win.
Fernando Soto-Luna pinned Anthony Price at 106; Davion Lowdermilk pinned Joseph Thomas at 113; McDowell forfeited to David McKinney at 120 and to Clay Beach at 126, and the Pats led 24-0.
Toby Finn (132) pinned Brandon Lindsay to put the Titans on the scoreboard. Calvin Stevenson accepted a forfeit for MHS at 138.
After a double forfeit at 145, Freedom’s Spencer Leonhardt pinned Preston Dennison at 152. Colby Miller followed with a pin of the Titans’ Dalton Byerly at 160.
McDowell’s Josh Morgan (170) and Jesse Barrier (182) won via forfeit, and neither club produced a 195-pounder. Trevor Kettles (220) took a forfeit for the Titans.
At 285, Freedom’s Wolfgang Wheeler pinned Jonathan Deal to round out the scoring.
McDowell is at Polk County for the Wolverine Duals this Saturday. The Titans return to NWC action next Tuesday at Hickory.
