The McDowell Titans had some success in their tennis match against the R-S Central Hilltoppers Wednesday, just not quite enough of it.
McDowell (0-10 overall, 0-5 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) won two singles and one doubles match, but still fell 6-3 in non-conference play.
Fifth seed John Ramirez scored a 10-4 victory over Zhavion Washington. Sixth seed Kaleb Burke defeated Cayden Marlowe 10-0. Burke and Isaac Lawing teamed up to defeat Washington and Damian Baynard 8-2 in doubles.
But that was it for the Titans’ victories.
Top seed Chris Boyette fell 10-3 to Nate Kersey. At the second seed, Isaac Smith fell 10-8 to Ethan Rector. At No. 3, Walter Catala lost 10-4 to Connor Settlemyre. Lawing, the fourth seed, dropped a 10-3 decision to Jacob Burnette.
Kersey and Burnette teamed up to beat Boyette and Smith 8-3. Rector and Settlemyre defeated Catala and Ramirez 8-5.
Watauga 6, McDowell 3 (Tuesday) – The Titans scored wins in all three doubles matches because Watauga wanted to get home and forfeited all three.
At the top seed, Boyette fell to Andrew Ganley 6-0, 6-0. Smith dropped a 6-0, 6-1 defeat to Calvin Huelsman at No. 2. Catala fell 6-1, 6-0 to Ethan Kanoy at the third seed.
At No. 4, Lawing fell 6-0, 6-4 to David Sprague. Ramirez was beaten 6-0, 6-2 at the fifth seed by Carson Dillman. At No. 6, Burke fell 6-1, 6-4 to Harper Shanley.
The teams of Boyette and Catala; Smith and Lawing; and Burke and Ramirez took forfeit wins in doubles.
McDowell was on the road at West Caldwell Thursday. Results were not available at press time.
