The McDowell Titan tennis team opened its season with a pair of non-conference defeats, falling 5-4 to Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy last week and 9-0 to Owen Tuesday.

Against Thomas Jefferson, McDowell got singles wins from No. 4 seed Isaac Lawing and fifth seed Thomas Moomaw. Top seed Chris Boyette, second seed Walter Catala and third seed Isaac Smith lost their matches.

In doubles, Catala and Andrew Byrd fell, as did John Ramirez and Orion Hess.

Owen dominated the Titans Tuesday. Catala fell 10-1 at the top seed, and that loss was followed by defeats to Boyette, Ramirez, Hess, Max Ledbetter and Byrd.

In doubles, Catala and Ramirez were blanked, as were Ledbetter and Cameron Dockery. Hess and Byrd lost 8-2.

The Titans hosted Owen Wednesday, but results were not available at press time. McDowell begins Northwestern 3A/4A Conference play next Tuesday on the road at Hickory.
