Two McDowell Lady Titan volleyball players were named to the All-Northwestern 3A/4A Conference team in voting by the league’s coaches.
Senior Makenna Parkins and junior Jessica Cannon made the all-conference team, each for the first time. McDowell finished the season 10-9, falling to Grimsley in the second round of the State 4A Playoffs after receiving a first-round bye.
Parkins, a 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter, led the team in kills with 3.0 per set. She also averaged 2.9 digs and 1 assist per set. Cannon, a 5-foot-10 junior outside hitter, averaged 1.9 kills per set, second to Parkins on the club. She also averaged 1.5 digs.
Not surprisingly, conference champions Watauga dominated the all-league selections with seven players. The Pioneers’ Rebekah Farthing was named as tri-Player of the Year with Hickory’s Olivia Pisel and Alexander Central’s Bryanna Payne.
Watauga’s Brooke Byrd was named Offensive Player of the Year; her teammate, Tegan Allen was Defensive Player of the Year; and Kris Hagaman was named Coach of the Year after leading the Pioneers to an unbeaten conference record, a 26-1 overall slate, and an appearance in the fourth round of the State 3A Playoffs, where the Pioneers were finally toppled by West Rowan.
Other All-NWC teams will be released when the respective sports are all finished with their seasons. Girls’ tennis and golf were released last week.
