Unbeaten East Burke pounds Lady Titans

The perilous journey that is the McDowell Lady Titans’ non-conference schedule began with a difficult first step Tuesday night.

The Lady Titans scored the game’s first four points, but the East Burke Cavaliers scored the next 18, and McDowell never recovered en route to a 58-35 blowout in the season opener at Titan Gym.

The undefeated Cavs (3-0) led 27-14 at the half, and then used a 15-0 run in the third quarter to turn the game into a rout. McDowell shot just 31 percent from the floor, 52 percent from the line, committed 24 turnovers and was out-rebounded 33-20 overall and 12-7 offensively.

Lily McKinney’s eight points led the Lady Titans, while East Burke put three players in double figures.

“Obviously, we had some rough spots,” said McDowell head coach Jennifer Kinninger. “Not taking care of the basketball was huge. I didn’t feel like we shot well from the free throw line, which was a little bit of a surprise. I did feel like our effort and energy for parts of the game were good. We were getting 50-50 balls and things like that.

“We’re trying to figure out who we are and we’ve got a long way to go. But this is a good group of girls and they have the potential to learn and grow, and I think you’ll see growth as we go into conference.”

McDowell’s half-court zone trap confused East Burke in the game’s opening moments, and the Lady Titans took a 4-0 lead.

But the Cavaliers recovered quickly. Brooke Arney (10 points), Gracie Ruff, Arianna Hawkins and Josie Hise (18 points) all hit 3-pointers during East Burke’s 18-0 run, which gave them an 18-6 lead after one quarter.

McDowell got as close as 29-19 on a steal and basket by Makayla Brewer with 6:30 left in the third quarter. But East Burke’s subsequent 15-0 run ended the threat. Hise had a triple and Ashlyn Stillwell added two 3-pointers during the run. East Burke led 44-22 after three quarters.

Dezi Williams added seven points for the Lady Titans. Zoe Miller came off the bench for six and Brewer added five and pulled a team-high six boards.

McDowell faces another difficult test tonight on the road at Mitchell.
