Cross-town rivals East and West McDowell Middle Schools battled on the baseball diamond earlier this week as the 2019 spring sports season is nearing its end.
In baseball action, the Spartans jumped out to an early lead and were able to hold off the Trojans 9-5 Tuesday evening at McDowell High.
West scored five runs in the bottom half of the first and was able to hold that lead the rest of the way. Braden Beck (2 doubles, single) and Hunter Byerly (2 doubles, single, BB) led the way with three hits each.
Zack Whitson (2BB) and Ricky Carr (BB) added two hits each. Matthew Spivey (1-5) and Eli Elliott (1-4) both accounted for a hit each.
Byerly took the win on the mound for the Spartans, tossing a complete game and allowing five runs on twelve hits. Byerly struck out nine batters.
Blake Greenway, Noah Higgins and Evan Kelley accounted for half of the East McDowell hits in the contest. Chase Coley also had one hit for the Trojans.
East McDowell will get a second chance at its rival on Thursday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
