For McDowell County Post 56, a season-long winning streak of 13 games came to an end on Thursday night as the Junior Legion ‘A’ team was shut out by South Caldwell 10-0 down in Sawmills.
McDowell (13-1) remains atop the division standings ahead of South Caldwell (11-2). Both teams have two games remaining.
Post 56 struggled in the early innings on Thursday, trailing 8-0 after two innings of play, and wasn’t able to overcome that large deficit.
Pitcher Ryan Parrish recorded a five-inning shutout win on the mound for the Spartans, allowing just one hit and striking out eight batters.
The lone McDowell hit in the game was a two-out single by Justin Davis in the top of the first. He advanced to second after Justin Dula was hit by a pitch but never got any further. The first inning was one of very few chances Post 56 had against Parrish.
South put together a five-run first inning against McDowell pitcher Chapel Matson and tacked on three more in the second, ending Matson’s (1 2/3 IP, 8R, 8H, 2K) outing on the mound before he could get out of the second inning.
In the first, South had six consecutive hits and was the recipient of a McDowell error on a fly ball to the outfield to help gain the early advantage.
Post 56 reliever Dusty Revis came in with two outs in the second and ended the surge. Revis finished with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits, two walks and striking out three batters.
In the fifth, the Spartans tacked on two additional runs, forcing the 10-run rule.
McDowell returns to Titan Field on Wednesday, hosting R-S Central as the regular season reaches its finale.
