Thursday evening, neighborhood activists, law enforcement and emergency personnel and officials from the county and the city of Marion came together for a “community conversation” with the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust about making McDowell healthier. “What changes do we want to see? We want to support your hopes and dreams in making McDowell County a healthier place,” asked Dr. Laura Gerald, director of the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, to the group.

Program Officer Jason Baisden spoke to the crowd in the dining room at the Senior Center. “We really did start by listening,” he said. “This is not necessarily about receiving a grant. This is about partnering. We listened and we learned.”

Paula Swepson Avery and Dawna Goode Ledbetter talked about the work of the West Marion Community Forum, including the Keeping it Fresh garden and the transportation effort.

Heather Yzquidero with the Foothills Food Hub talked about how people have come together to address the serious problem of food insecurity. “We have way too many people in McDowell who don’t know where their food is coming from,” she said.
